The vehicle now protected with the "Dashcam Defense": a 2018 Tesla Model X!
BlackVue is one of only a few select brands of dashcams that we recommend for these awesome all-electric vehicles from Tesla.
When you look at the Model X, let's be honest, it might look like a typical crossover SUV. It has some very clean lines, a nice wide stance, tons of glass, all-wheel drive and easily accessible tailgate for easy loading and unloading. All the standard features you would find on a Nissan or Toyota Crossover SUV.
“Do not be fooled by its commonplace appearance. Like so many things, it is not what is outside, but what is inside that counts.”
And what is on the inside is worthy of the article in Wired magazine.
Look closely at the photo above and you can just start to see the BlackVue DR750S-2CH front camera near the center of the windshield.
When you look at this installation from the nose of the vehicle, like other installs we have showcased, the DR750S front camera just blends into the background. Nearly disappearing while standing outside the car. The sleek and discreet design are two of the factors we use when suggesting the BlackVue products to our customers.
Oh, we are channeling your inner Michael J Fox yet with those gull wing doors?
When standing just to the right of center you can begin to see the dashcam in it position. Slightly below the rear view mirror, your BlackVue dashcam is completely hidden from both passenger and driver while you are sitting in the cockpit of this vehicle.
Keep this photo in mind, we have something else in store for you (regarding front camera placement) a little further down the page.
Again, from the center of the vehicle, you can get an idea of how close you need to be before the DR750S-2CH front camera finally reveals itself. Like we said earlier, the sleek and discreet form factor is one of the things that sets BlackVue apart from other dashcam manufacturers.
This view, as if you were looking at the rear-view mirror, shows how small and easily hidden the front-facing camera is. It still gives the ideal point of view to watch your back, both while driving on the road or just parked at work. One of the challenges with the installation on the Tesla Model X is the windshield. Since the front wind screen just keeps going and going, we need to take more care that normal in order to disguise the two wires that run to the front camera.
This closer view from the passenger side, you get a good look at the mounting used on the front camera. The view above shows how small and easily hidden the front-facing 750 camera is. It still gives the ideal point of view to watch your back, both while driving on the road or just parked at work or at the shoppin mall.
One of the challenges with the installation on the Tesla Model X is the windshield. Since the front wind screen blends right into a moon roof, we collect our 2 wires and run them into the factory installed wire cover that is already on the glass windshield/roof.
Now from the driver side, you can barely see the front camera once it is installed on to the windshield. Again, this device looks to be an OEM component and should not draw any unwanted attention.
Completely hidden from the driver’s line of sight. Inconspicuous and vigilant. The BlackVue DR750S-2CH protects you and your vehicle without getting in the way of the performance or aesthetics of the vehicle. And with this Model X, we certainly did not want to get in the way.
Now moving to the rear of the vehicle, you can barely see the rear-facing camera once it is installed on to the rear glass. It is so well hidden, that is imperceptible from the outside and presents zero distractions to the driver.
Even with the rear camera at eye level, it blends to the interior. Notice how our installers have taken it to the next level, routing the rear coaxial cable into the existing conduit that passes through the tailgate junction with the body of the Model X.
The vehicles produced by Tesla are so well designed, from an "user experience" point of view, installation of the rear camera cable may be one of the biggest challenges on the Model X. When in doubt, please consult a professional for installation assistance.
The final picture in our main gallery is of the Power Magic Pro, BlackVue's battery protection module. At the customer's request, we have installed the 'PMP' in the driver's side foot well. You may be thinking about previous install galleries where we put the Power Magic into the glove box (Remember that Ford F150 Raptor), well you are right. We do usually install the power protection modules in the glove box, but in this specific installation, our client wanted to have it installed in the foot well. Not a problem at all.
And now on to the Bonus Material!
What is better than a brand new 2018 Tesla Model X, well 2 of course.
We at The Dashcam Store wanted to show you a few images from another client installation to highlight an alternate mounting location for the front camera.
So, when you are standing outside this stunning Model X, in Obsidian Black, even with the Texas sun beating us down, the DR750S-2CH installed on the front window is difficult to make out.
Now that the vehicle has retreated in from of the sun, you can get a better idea where the front camera is located: perfectly centered and down tight on the dash board. Regrettably, we have not been able to obtain sample footage from this client, so just imagine Need for Speed; hood view for an idea of what the recordings will look like.
Here is the up-close view of the front camera, Again, the DR750S is inconspicuous and vigilant. Note our technicians have utilized protective braided conduit over the two wires (power and rear video cables) to give this installation an "extra" professional touch.
They view of the front camera, from the passenger's seat, you can see the DR750S front camera, but it is completely out of the way. As if it came that way from Fremont, CA.
